What Is a Yellow‑throated Marten?

The yellow‑throated marten (Martes [Charronia] flavigula) is a member of the mustelid family found across Asia. This species thrives in a variety of habitats, from temperate mixed forests to tropical rainforests.

Identifying Features and Marten Size

Yellow-throated martens are known for their glossy coats, typically tinged with yellow, orange, and black, including a bold facial mask.

Adults measure approximately 45–60 cm (18–24 in) in body length, plus a 30–40 cm (12–16 in) bushy tail, and weigh 2–4 kg (4.5–9 lb). In terms of marten size, they are larger and more robust than many other types of marten, which helps them forage strategically across complex forest canopies.

Habitat and Behaviour

Yellow‑throated martens occupy a fragmented range across continental Asia and several large islands, including Taiwan, Hainan, Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. They prefer old‑growth forests with high canopy cover and often den in tree cavities. They hunt both in trees and on the ground, feeding on small mammals, birds, fruits, and carrion.

These martens are highly adaptable and sometimes roam into areas with higher human activity. In areas where forests are fragmented, they may explore agricultural lands, forest edges, or rural settlements. Their ability to use varied food sources, including fruit trees and poultry, sometimes brings them into conflict with people.

Conservation and Recovery

IUCN status: Least Concern (global), but varies by country

Populations are generally healthy in Southeast Asia but are increasingly vulnerable in northern and western areas, particularly in Russia, China, both Koreas, Taiwan, and India. Key threats include deforestation, habitat fragmentation, hunting for fur, accidental trapping, conflict with domestic animals, and road mortality.

Understanding risks in human-populated regions is essential for informed conservation, mitigation, and coexistence planning.
